The liability protection on your renters insurance generally covers you if your pet does damage to another person’s property or bites someone. It does not typically cover your pet damaging your own personal belongings. Certain dog breeds (listed below) as higher-risk than others. As such, a few breeds are excluded from liability protection.
Note: Breed restrictions do not apply for residents of California, Massachusetts, Maryland, and New Jersey
The breeds that are excluded are:
- Akita
- Alaskan Malamute
- Pit bull
- Rottweiler
- German Shepherd
- Doberman Pinscher
- Chow Chow
- Presa Canario
- Staffordshire Bull Terrier
- Great Dane
- St. Bernard
- Mastiff
- Cane Corso
- Siberian Husky
- Husky
- Wolf mix
- Dogs with a "prior bite history"
We like those dogs too, but unfortunately we can't provide liability coverage for incidents resulting from these breeds. :-(
